Biography

TRAINING: I'm training two to three times daily, only resting on Sundays. Tuesday and Thursday are my toughest workouts, where I do 15 hard rounds of sparring, wrestling-specific drills and Muay Thai training.

When and why did you start training for fighting? I started Judo and Tae Kwon Do when I was 12 years old, Muay Thai when I was 14 and MMA when I was 18. I started because I wanted to do something physical and stay active.

What ranks and titles have you held? Black belt in Muay Thai and brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Do you have any heroes? God

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It is a dream come true; it means everything to me as a fighter and is where I always wanted to fight.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? No

What was your job before you started fighting? I was in high school

Favorite grappling technique: Arm lock from guard

Favorite striking technique: Kicks

• Seven wins by TKO, four by submission (3 rear naked, 1 armbar)

• Pro since 2008

• 10-3-1, 1 NC in last 15 fights

• Holds 2009 win over current UFC contender John Lineker

• Origin of nickname: “My nickname means back country. I always listen to music, and when I was younger and had no nickname, someone asked me if I had a nickname for my debut. I said I didn’t. It got a little quiet and he said “your nickname will be ‘Sertanejo’” and it stayed there.”
