Biography

Rafael dos Anjos has been a force in the UFC for several years, but it wasn’t until he relocated his family from Brazil to California that his career took a major turn.

His decision to move north in 2012 undoubtedly played a role in dos Anjos getting a crack at the UFC lightweight title – and his unexpected victory over champion Anthony Pettis at UFC 185.

Dos Anjos, the first Brazilian to hold the UFC lightweight belt, is a veteran of 31 MMA fights, but his bout against Pettis was his first title shot. He earned it by winning eight of his previous nine fights, including victories over Donald Cerrone, Benson Henderson and Nate Diaz.

Of his 24 wins, dos Anjos, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, has eight submissions and four knockouts. His unanimous decision win over Pettis, considered among the best pound-for-pound fighters in the UFC, was a testament to his training and game planning with his head coach, Rafael Cordeiro. Dos Anjos, 30, dominated Pettis for five rounds in what was clearly the fight of his life.

Do you have any heroes? None

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It’s the greatest opportunity, and I am very happy.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? No

What was your job before you started fighting? I was a jiu-jitsu instructor

Specific accomplishments in amateur competition? Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion

Favorite grappling technique: Arm lock

He brought his wife and two sons to the U.S. from Rio de Janeiro because he said he didn’t have the facilities or training partners there to suit his needs. Many times, he was forced to work alone in his gym.

But with the blessing of his wife, Christiane, who understood his desire to continue climbing up the UFC ranks, the family moved to Southern California.

“She’s the one who believes in me more than I do,” dos Anjos said. “I know we did the right thing.”

In a stacked division with such notables as Pettis, Cerrone, Henderson and Khabib Nurmagomedov, the crown rests uneasily on dos Anjos’ head. But it took him a long time to win the belt. And he plans to keep it.

• Has won 10 of his last 13

• Eight wins by submission (4 RNC, 3 armbar, kimura), five by knockout

• Has competed in the Pancrase and Shooto organizations

• Submitted PRIDE veteran Johil de Oliveira
