The welterweight headliner was billed as the old school vs the new school, and the performances of each fighter made a strong case for both. Edwards showed deft speed and savage counter-game while a bloodied Cerrone unleashed the brawling stand-up game that made him famous. Both were unrelenting until the final bell, and on this night it was the new school that made their case the loudest. Two fighters who love to end things in the first round took turns trying to do precisely that. It was a wild few minutes with momentum swinging back and forth, Pedro rocking OSP, and OSP taking down Pedro. In the battle of the Jessicas, it was Eye who looked more concise and technical in the first round, finding homes for her strikes and leg kicks. Clark relied on counterstrike combinations, but put herself in harms way in the process. Eye dropped her in the second, but Clark quickly found her feet. Clark marched down Eye, but it was Eye still getting the better of the striking. Jessica Eye: “I got an emotional in the Octagon because I just have felt no one has understood what I’ve been up against over the years. I only fought at bantamweight because I wanted to be in the UFC but it was never my weight never where I wanted to be. It’s just so nice to have people finally see that and stop doubting me. I cant wait to get back to Cleveland and support my team at Strong Style Stipe Miocic and then keep training and keep proving myself. I have no problem starting at the bottom and working myself all the way to the top.”

The main card kicked off with two guys trying to knock each other’s heads off. Haymakers aplenty, Jingliang also was effective at damaging Abe’s left leg with persistent kicks. While Abe never relented, Jingliang seemed to pick up steam as the fight went on. The long-awaited UFC debut of Petr Yan did not disappoint, as he pressured Ishihara against the fence, rattled him with a left, dropped him with a right, and poured on the punches to get the first round stoppage. #UFCSingapore Official Result: @PetrYanUFC def @teruto_ko by TKO, 3:28, first round.

Petr Yan : “I had some jitters before the fight because it was my UFC debut. My team helped me however, and once I stepped in the Octagon, it was good. My plan was to feel him out at the start, gauge his openings and then once I had those, go for it. I saw his shots and I saw most were missing so I went for the finish. I really want to fight on the Moscow card because I’ve fought there before, it’s my home and I have a big fan base there. I really want to be there. I’ll fight anyone the UFC picks.”

Felipe Arantes vs Song Yadong

The first round belonged to Yadong who got off 45+ more strikes than his opponent, and controlled the fight from the ground when it went to the mat. Arantes found himself on his back again in the second where Yadong was able to unload some fists and knees as he wore down his opponent. The fight briefly returned to its feet late in the round, where Yadong wielded his right elbow to Aldana’s head for a brutal KO. #UFCSingapore Official Result: Song Yadong def @SertanejoUFC, by KO second round, 4:59

Song Yadong: “The pressure of success only motivates me. The more the better. Ive been training hard and am ready for the UFC to come back to China. When I got to debut last year in China, it meant everything. Being able to be on another Chinese card will mean Chinese fans can understand MMA more but the world can see the Chinese culture up close through the lens of MMA.”

Both fighters looked crisp and traded momentum in the early-going, with Young pressuring Dy backwards with a flurry of strikes, only to have Dy recover and land some solid counters and combos. Young’s powerful right hand was a hindrance for Dy, including when it opened a gash on his head in the second round. Dy never relented in his attack, but he ate that right hand one too many times, and when the last one rocked him, Young sensed his opening and closed the fight with a barrage that had his opponent curl into a heap on the mat. #UFCSingapore Official Result: @ShaneYoungMMA def @DyIncredibleMMA 4:40, second round.

Shane Young : “I’ve just got to open my ears more when I fight and listen to my coaches. It was nice to get back to my winning ways, it felt how like it used to be. Taking that fight on 8 days’ notice was different than Im used to. Recently, Ive really begun rediscovering my heritage and I had shunned it for years. I was caught up in trying to be a white person but now being in touch with my Maori side has made me connect my training to our warrior heritage.”

Aldana came out hot in his Octagon debut, throwing everything he had with full power. His aggression was expoited by Kenan, who was able to time some heavy counterstikes, one that opened a cut on Aldana’s eye. A crisp standup battle followed until a right hand from Kenan stunned Aldana, and as he wobbled to the mat, Kenan opportunistically rained down the hammer fists to get the stoppage. #UFCSingapore Official Result: Kenan Song def @AldanaTorin by TKO, second round, 4:45.

Song Kenan : “I have a lot of confidence in my striking so I always try to keep the fight there. If I am able to drop my opponent, I am confident on the ground as well. I hope the UFC will come to China again because its good for mixed martial arts. It gives the Chinese people the ability to see the sport and then they will want to follow it or train in it. It is an honor to represent my people and country and fighting in China is always a dream.”

Despite some early fence control by Anzai, this short fight was all Matthews. A beautiful sequence of knees to the head, strikes, a takedown and eventually a choke ended his opponent’s night early. Jake Matthews : “The game plan was more about what he was going to do. We knew he was going to be the aggressor and throw wild combos or come in hard and shoot. I was surprised by how far out he was shooting. I don’t think he wanted to battle with the hands, especially after my last fight. It was almost like he was committing suicide by shooting from that far out. In the first clinch I thought he’d be a lot stronger, that’s why I sat there for so long. After I landed the first knee, I knew he felt it. When I eventually got him down, I knew an opening would present itself. I knew I would win this fight. I mean I prepared and fought him like he was a champion. I did what I normally do, we call it the Jingliang mentality, just get in there and go wild.”

Xiaonan’s took advantage of her size advantage early is this largely standup battle, slipping in leg kicks and well-timed jabs, while the Brazilian Pereira fired off some heavy counterstrikes when her opponent closed distance. Both seemed content to stand and trade in the middle of the Octagon, routinely landing heavier and heavier blows as the fight wore on. These men came to throw hands, and throw hands they did. Previously undefeated Inoue stepped forward working his efficient jab, while Schnell returned fire with some excellent counterstriking and combinations. Both fighters effectively worked their game plan and at times it was hard to tell had the edge. Matt Schnell : “I didn’t know if I had done enough to get the decision. I knew I had hurt him with a few shots, he got rocked and wobbled back a few times. It was close though, its war out there. The kid is good. You don’t get to be 11-0 without being pretty good. He’s 21 years old and a big Japanese prospect but Im not a good matchup. I can fight everywhere, I can make the adjustments, Im a tough kid. I’m 2-2 in the UFC so it’s hard to say what’s next. I just want to get back in there and continue to get comfortable. This was only like the third time I ever went to a decision in my 30 fight career and I just want to keep adding up experience in the Octagon. I can fight with anyone in the world. If I land a good cross, I can lay anyone down on a given night. Its hard to come back from two losses, actually it was three because I lost one on The Ultimate Fighter, but I think this really shows who I am.”

Jenel Lausa vs Ulka Sasaki

Sasaki controlled the first round out of the gate with a takedown and some solid grappling that kept Lausa on the defensive. Lausa came out swinging in the second, slipping a couple takedowns and landing some huge strikes until Sasaki eventually succeeded in a takedown, pinning Lausa on his back and getting off some good ground and pound before sliding into position and scoring the rear naked choke. Ulka Sasaki: “That was a lot of fun. I was happy to show off my wrestling. Going and training with Aljamain Sterling really helped my wrestling and it was a big part of the game plan. I called out Sergio Pettis, not in a bad way, but because I respect him and I think our styles would make a very exciting fight.”

A battle between two fighters looking to stake their claim in the new women’s flyweight division, Melinda Fabian and Ji Yeon Kim opened the Fight Night Singapore event with a mostly stand-up boxing battle that saw both fighters land and eat plenty of strikes, both favoring the overhand right. Kim kept the pressure from the center of the Octagon, seeming to fire the heaviest shots, but Fabian persisted and held the lead in number of strikes and fight control. The fight concluded with both fighters embracing respectfully for a fight well fought. Kim emerged from the close contest with the split. #UFCSingapore Official Result: @BeautyYoni (29-28. 29-28) def Melinda Fabian (29-28) by split decision.

Ji Yeon Kim: “I think I did enough to win the fight so I was very confident when they read the scorecards. I would love for my next fight to be in Korea. I am happy to be a representative of Asian & Korean martial arts but with that there also comes some pressure and burdens, but I am ready for the challenge.”
