Main event UFC heavyweight title fight: Stipe Miocic defeats Fabricio Werdum to win the championship
With one punch Stipe Miocic became the new heavyweight champion after knocking out Fabricio Werdum in front of 45,000 of his fellow countrymen at 2:47 of the first round. Miocic was backpedaling as Werdum came charging forward looking for a combo, but he walked into an on target counter right that ended the fight on the spot. Miocic is the 15th UFC champion in history.

Stipe Miocic: “First off I want to thank the fans. I know you guys were against me, but you were amazing, you make this sport happen. Fabricio Werdum is tough, he had me guessing. I trained hard, man. He’s quicker than I thought, he was catching me off guard. It was a good shot. This is what I want to talk about, these guys put their time and effort into me, they wasted their money on me, but it was damn worth it, wasn’t it? Cleveland, we have a champion!”
Fabricio Werdum: “I am going to come back here and I am going to be the champion.”
Co-main: Jacare Souza defeats Vitor Belfort
The plan was likely always to get the fight to the ground, and Jacare Souza wasted no time implementing his gameplan. He got top position and eventually mount and finished Vitor Belfort by TKO at 4:38 of the first round. Souza looked to be the more physical fighter and he used his two takedowns to land 43 significant strikes and Belfort’s face showed the results of the strikes when it was over.

Jacare Souza: “It was impressive and really special. I gave my best and, thank God, I won. It is a huge victory, very important. I said I wouldn’t let the fans down. The next step is the belt.”
Cris Cyborg vs Leslie Smith
In just over a minute, Cris Cyborg dropped Leslie Smith and then pounced with a heavy swarm of punches before the ref had to call it at 1:21 of the very first round. It was a left-right combo that dropped Smith before Cyborg just unloaded with a final tally of 25 significant strikes.

Cris Cyborg: “There is nothing better, I am very happy and I got in there very calm. I didn’t push hard and I studied more. Many people who have followed me since the beginning were waiting for me to come to UFC. I’m very happy. I was punching, I don’t know. The referee stopped it. My job was to punch. I admire Leslie for coming here, because she made my dream come true. I felt good, I didn’t get tired. I fought well.”
Shogun Rua defeats Corey Anderson
In a very close split decision, Shogun Rua edged Corey Anderson by a score of 28-29, 29-28, 29-28. Shogun almost finished Anderson in the first round with a nice hook, but Anderson was saved by the horn.

Shogun Rua: “I am very happy, Curitiba deserved such a show. Several champions were born here. I’m happy to represent my city with a victory. Today, I’m the happiest man in the world. Now it is time to celebrate with my family and my fans. I will take a rest, improve a lot and come back better.”
Corey Anderson: “I knew he was big on leg locks, if I took him down I was confident in my ground game, but I wanted to weather the storm and tire him out before I went for the takedowns. I just need to go back to the drawing board. I want a guy in the top-10 next. Hopefully Dana and Joe feel that I won that fight and I can continue moving forward, otherwise I have to back pedal a little bit and work my way back up. This is the fight game, you win some and you lose some; there’s nothing you can do about that.”
Bryan Barberena defeats Warlley Alves
Bryan Barberena continues his winning way against unbeaten prospects as he takes out Warlley Alves by unanimous decision (29-28x3). Barberena really pushed the pace in the third round, landing almost triple the significant strikes compared to Alves, who almost submitted Barberena in the first round.

Bryan Barberena: “The crowd was awesome. In the fight I’m really good at blocking out the crowd noise, but it’s not every day that you get to walk out in front of 45,000 screaming fans – whether they’re for you or against you. I’ll definitely keep this experience with me, but it was all business once I got in the Octagon. After the first round my coaches told me that I needed to push the pace because he was getting tired and throw combinations and that’s exactly what I did. Keep giving me challenges. Give me a ranked guy and I’ll knock him down too. My opponents in the UFC have been a combined 33-1 before they fought me, I’m ready.”

Demian Maia defeats Matt Brown
It was virtually 15 minutes of Demian Maia mauling Matt Brown on the ground before the tough “Immortal” one was forced to tap out due to a rear naked choke at 4:31 of the third round. Maia landed takedown after takedown and used a body lock to take the fight out of Brown, who did offer an early third round flurry. But in the end the Brazilian was too much.

Demian Maia: “He was trained to protect his neck, he did a good job. I will improve that. Now, I hope my next fight is for the belt.”
Matt Brown: “I 100-percent respect Demian and his style, that’s why I wanted to fight him. A loss means I found a new way to do things wrong. I will be back to training next week.”
Thiago Santos defeats Nate Marquardt
It only took Thiago Santos 3:39 to finish Nate Marquardt in the first round with a heavy barrage of punches. It was a straight left that started the onslaught from Santos, who knew he had Marquardt buckled and capitalized. That’s 4 straight wins for Santos, which is good for the 3rd longest active win streak in the middleweight division.

Thiago Santos: “I felt great, I wanted to beat Nate very much so I can go after bigger challenges. Thank God I could win. I hope I can face a highly ranked opponent in my next fight”
Francisco Trinaldo defeats Yancy Medeiros
In what is a leading candidate for fight of the night, Francisco Trinaldo was outstanding against Yancy Medeiros, landing 110 total significant strikes en route to a unanimous decision win, 29-26, 30-27, 30-26. Trinaldo has now won six in a row.

Francisco Trinaldo: “It was a very tough fight, we both came to give it all inside the Octagon. It was a great result for me. Now, I want to improve and face whoever comes next.”
Yancy Medeiros: “This fight didn’t go my way, but the crowd was awesome, I loved it. The crowd is so big and they’re so loud. Unfortunately I couldn’t follow my game plan tonight and I need to go back to the drawing board. It would mean everything to me to fight on a card in Hawaii. That’s why I fought here, I told Joe I’d fight anywhere in the world if I could fight on a card in Hawaii.”
John Lineker defeats Rob Font
John Lineker isn’t called “Hands of Stone” for nothing. The former flyweight brought the power against Rob Font and earned the unanimous decision win (30-27, 29-28, 30-26). Lineker knocked Font down twice in the fight and almost finished late in the third round after a combo dropped Font. Lineker out-landed Font in sign. Strikes, 80-42.

John Lineker: “It was a lot of emotions and adrenaline fighting at home. I called the crowd to give me a hand and catch some positive energy. The game plan was waiting the first minute, waiting for his move. I want to establish myself in the division, improving my game to get closer to a title shot.”

Rogerio Nogueira defeats Patrick Cummins
With his entire country watching, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira delivered perhaps his most amazing UFC performance to date, knocking out Patrick Cummins standing in the first round with seconds remaining before the horn. He landed a perfect right hook to stun Cummins and then went on the attack, landing a total of 41 significant strikes before the ref finally stepped in to stop the fight.

Rogerio Nogueira: “The crowd really supported me. When I saw the fans, I really went there to win. Curitiba is special. This win puts me higher in the rankings. The important thing was come back and show to the people that I am alive, that I am a contender. Cummins is a very tough younger guy. A knockout like this one shows that I am very well trained.”
Sergio Moraes vs Luan Chagas fight a draw
Luan Chagas came out guns blazing against Sergio Moraes early in their UFC FIGHT PASS bout, and landed some big blows in the opening round. But the veteran Moraes weathered the storm and used his ground game to stifle Chagas in the final two rounds. In the end, the result was a split draw as the third judge scored the fight 28-28 after each fighter got the win 29-28 by one of the first two judges.

Sergio Moraes: “I have to watch the fight again, it was close. I wasn’t comfortable fighting my fight tonight, but I'll keep training to face the best fighters.”
Luan Chagas : “It was a very tough fight, we had pretty much the same game plan. I knocked him down, but he recovered. Hats off to him. I'll keep coming back stronger until I get a title shot.”
Renato Moicano defeats Zubaira Tukhugov
Moicano wins by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Moicano attempts a triangle choke for the latter half of the opening round with Tukhugov avoiding and showing impressive scrambling. Round 2 is faster and back-and-forth paced with both fighters staying on their feet throughout, Tukhugov the aggressor and Moicano maintaining center-control. Moicano’s cut under his left eye opens up early in the third but he ultimately lands the bigger shots throughout the final round and remains unbeaten (10-0-1) with a split decision victory.

Renato Moicano: “It was a very good fight, I did a good job, but it could have been better. I was afraid of his takedowns and decided to go to striking. I have to improve to compete with the best.”
Zubaira Tukhugov: “I thought that I won the fight. It was really close, I guess I will have to go back and watch it again to see what really happened.”
